When Technique Gets in the Way of Expression

Hi Reader

Here again, sharing some of my thought process.

I've been thinking lately about something I see more and more in macro photography: the pursuit of technical perfection.

Perfect sharpness. Every detail visible. Nothing left outside the focus plane.

And while there is something undeniably fascinating about what we can achieve technically, I started wondering:

When does technique stop serving the photograph and start getting in the way of expression?

A photograph is not an inventory of details.

Sometimes the blur, the darkness, the space around a subject, or the gradual transition from sharpness to softness can be what gives an image depth, atmosphere and meaning.

This is something I also learned through painting. Our eyes don't understand space only through detail. Softness, color, contrast and definition all help our brains interpret distance and depth.

So in my latest article, When Technique Gets in the Way of Expression, I explore what happens when technique becomes more important than what we are actually trying to communicate.

Because technique is a tool.

It should help us express what we see, what we feel, and what caught our attention in the first place.

The photograph is something larger.

When Technique Gets in the Way of Expression

There is something almost irresistible about a perfectly sharp macro photograph.

Every tiny hair is visible.

Every scale, texture and surface is rendered in incredible detail.

I'd love to know what you think.
