Can photography become an act of translation?

Hi Reader,

A few days ago, I joined a friend while she worked on her property, camera in hand and no particular expectations.

The first thing I found was a tiny lynx spider. Then, a masked tree frog resting quietly on a branch, perfectly camouflaged in its daytime colors.

That afternoon helped me put something into words that had been quietly growing for years.

I've always believed photography could tell stories, reveal beauty, and inspire people to look more closely at the natural world.

But I realized there is another layer to why I do what I do.

Every photograph is an attempt to help someone else love these small lives the way I do.

That realization became my newest Paths Through the Wild essay, An Act of Translation.

I hope you'll enjoy reading it.

An act of translation

There is a moment that always feels the same.

It doesn't matter how long it has been since I last picked up my camera or how distracted life has made me feel.

The moment I truly see a small creature, something shifts.

I'd love to hear what resonates with you after you've read it.

Warmly,

Cynthia
